&#39Cure&#39 for Indian &#39werewolf boy&#39 found

London, November 20 (ANI): A cure for an Indian boy with &#39werewolf syndrome&#39, a condition which leaves the face and body of the sufferer covered in hair, has been found by Colombia University researchers in New York.

The researchers attribute their groundbreaking work to testosterone injections, which they used on 11-year-old Pruthviraj Patil, one of just 50 people in the world with the rare genetic condition, called hypertrichosis.

The boy had already failed to respond to homeopathy, traditional Indian Ayurvedic remedies, and laser surgery before a worldwide appeal was made to doctors to help him find a permanent cure.

The Columbia University research into Pruthviraj&#39s condition has been filmed as part of a U.S. television documentary called &#39My Shocking Story: Real Wolf Kids&#39, reports the Telegraph.

The film followed the lives of a number of hypertrichosis-suffering kids living in Mumbai, India, including Pruthviraj.

Pruthviraj was stared at and bullied throughout his childhood due to the thick matted hair covering his face, and he would rarely leave his home village because of the cruelty of strangers.

At the time of Pruthviraj&#39s birth, some villagers told his mother that she had given birth to a God, some thought that he was a supernatural creature, and some called him a bad omen due to his unique appearance.

However, despite his abnormal hair growth Pruthviraj, who is from the district of Sangli, near Bombay, is healthy, sporty and popular at school. (ANI)

It&#39s splitsville for Paris Hilton and Benji Madden?

Washington, Nov 20 (ANI): After more than nine months of dating, Paris Hilton and beau Benji Madden have parted ways, according to reports.

The split happened a few days ago and sources claim that the pair wanted to take beak and hence called it quits.

She is saddened by the breakup but they&#39re just too different and they wanted different things in life. He was loyal and sweet but it was time to take a break, People quoted a source close to Hilton as saying.

However, reps for both Hilton and Madden could not be reached for comment.

Recently, Paris was snapped sharing intimate moments with ex-boyfriend Stavros Niarchos at nightspot Mokai in Miami.

However, the source claimed that the two were simply engaged in a close but friendly conversation.

In no way are they romantic, nor do they want to get back together, said the source.

In fact, on Tuesday night, Hilton and Madden partied separately in Los Angeles.

The socialite and the guitarist have recently denied reports that they were unfaithful to each other during their relationship.

And just one month back, Madden publicly claimed how happy he and Hilton were.

I wear my feelings on my sleeve. I&#39m very open about how in love I am - Paris and I are very happy, he said in October. (ANI)

General Motors to shut down Thailand plant for two months

Bangkok, Nov 20 (DPA) In one of the first blows to be felt from the &#39Hamburger Crisis&#39 in Thailand, General Motors Thursday announced plans to close its Thailand plant for two months, paying employees 75 percent of their wages.

&#39If we don&#39t close down we will have an oversupply,&#39 said GM spokesman Chartchai Suwannasevok, confirming the US giant&#39s plan to close its plant in Rayong province for the months of December and January.

GM&#39s 2,000 Thai employees will have to take a 25 percent pay cut during the suspension period and the company has offered 258 employees early retirement with 10 months pay, in preparation for a slowdown in 2009.

GM&#39s Rayong plant has a capacity to produce 130,000 units per annum, but this year&#39s sales are estimated at 100,000 units.

The plant assembles and manufacturers GM Colorado pickups, Captiva SUVs, Optra sedans and Aveo compact cars, mostly for the export markets.

Thailand is a major automobile assembly hub in South-East Asia, manufacturing an estimated 1.4 million units this year, more than half of which were destined for exports.

The local industry, which has attracted all the major Japanese auto manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Isuzu along with US giants GM and Ford, employs an estimated 500,000 Thais.

Thailand is expected to suffer massive unemployment next year as its export industries dry up, due to falling demand in the US, European Union and Japan, the kingdom&#39s three main markets.

&#39With orders for 2009 down 20 to 30 percent, Thai factories in all sectors are expected to lay-off at least 500,000 employees next year,&#39 said Thaveekij Jaturajarernkul, chairman of the labour committee and the Federation of Thai Industries.

Justice to go mobile in Karnataka

Bangalore, Nov 20 (IANS) Karnataka is all set to take justice and legal literacy to the doorsteps of its people across the state, particularly to the poor as they cannot pay for the expensive and time-consuming court battles.

A specially designed bus will serve as a court room to conduct the lok adalat (people&#39s court).

Lok adalat is a mechanism for speedy settlement of disputes through conciliation, compromise or arbitration. It is not a substitute to the courts but supplements their function. For the financially weak, it is a relief as they need not pay any court or lawyer&#39s fees for the lok adalats to take up their case.

Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan will launch the &#39justice on wheels&#39 service here Saturday.

&#39Delivering social justice to one and all is our duty, and poor people from rural areas have either no access to legal aid or are not aware about its existence. Thus, the mobile justice van will be a tool for the poor people of Karnataka to get access to justice,&#39 Karnataka High Court judge and Executive Chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) V. Gopala Gowda told IANS.

Christened Mobile Lok Adalat and Legal Literacy Chariot, the bus has been designed like a mini court room, Gowda said.

The mobile lok adalat will have a judicial official and a conciliator. The &#39court room&#39 has enough space to seat the litigants and their advocates, Gowda said.

&#39Along with solving small and petty cases, the mobile court will help in spreading legal awareness among the masses,&#39 he said.

The launch of the service coincides with the opening of a two-day regional conference of southern states on &#39Initiative on Supporting the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Through State Legal Services Authorities&#39 by Balakrishnan.

Karnataka will be the second state in the country, after Haryana, to come up with the idea of spreading legal awareness and providing legal aid to the poor villagers through mobile courts.

Each of Karnataka&#39s 29 district legal services authorities will be entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that the mobile court visits all villages under its jurisdiction.

&#39We&#39re hoping the initiative will help the poor and needy to get justice at their doorsteps. Poor people generally cannot afford to come to taluk (sub-division) and district courts. Our endeavour will ensure settlement of disputes of the rural people at their own home,&#39 said K.L. Manjunath, another judge of the Karnataka High Court and chairman of its legal services committee.

As a part of its endeavour to ensure speedy justice, KSLSA has also set up a 24-hour legal aid clinic at the Bangalore Mediation Centre.

&#39We&#39ve been trying all possible measures to provide legal aid and services to one and all at quickest possible time. We have succeeded in resolving and reaching settlement in several cases till date,&#39 said Gowda.

&#39The mobile lok adalat will start functioning from Bidar (a district in north Karnataka) very soon,&#39 he added.

Skinny? You aren&#39t really the best model

Sydney, Nov 20 (IANS) Many in the the fashion industry think that only skinny models sell but their average sized counterparts may just be as alluring and effective in fashion ads.

Queensland University (QU) doctoral candidate Phillippa Diedrichs is exploring the potential of using more realistic models in place of ultra thin or ultra muscular images in the mass media to sell products, and what impact this will have on promoting positive body image.

There is a well established link between exposure to ultra-thin models and poor body image in the media, disordered eating and exercising behaviours for both men and women.

Diedrichs created a series of mock ads for a range of beauty, clothing and accessory products where more than 300 men and women, aged between 18 and 25, viewed themes which featured either size 8-10 or 14 female models.

&#39They rated how likely they would be to buy the products in the advertisements and how they felt about their own body image after seeing the ads,&#39 she said.

&#39Both men and women rated the advertisements featuring the average-size models as equally effective as the advertisements featuring the thinner models.&#39

&#39Also, women who saw the size 14 models felt significantly better about their own bodies in comparison to those who saw the thinner models,&#39 she said.

Diedrichs said her research offered exciting implications that could be made to promote positive body image, according to a QU release.

&#39It is often argued that only thin models will sell. However, my research indicates that average-size models may be just as effective in advertisements and that many consumers actually want to see more realistic models,&#39 she said.

&#39My research provides an evidence-base for this, by demonstrating that presenting more average-sized models in the media has the potential to improve body image.

&#39I&#39ll be interviewing magazine editors and people from the fashion and advertising industries to find out what they think about average-size models and to tell them about my research in an effort to encourage change in the media,&#39 she said.

Daschle wants to be White House health &#39czar&#39

Washington, Nov 20 (IANS) Creating a team that&#39s &#39diverse in many ways&#39 President-elect Barack Obama has chosen former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle to overhaul the US healthcare system, media reports said.

Daschle has not only indicated he wants the job secretary of health and human services, but also negotiated that he will also serve as the White House health &#39czar,&#39 or point person, so that he will report directly to the incoming president, CNN said.

By wearing two hats, Daschle - not White House staffers - will be writing the health care plan to extend health coverage to the 47 million Americans who lack insurance that made a high priority during the campaign,it said.

Media reports said the precise timing of the announcement has not been worked out, but Daschle is likely to officially join the Obama transition team as the lead adviser on health issues in the next few weeks. An Obama transition official would not comment.

Daschle is currently billed as a &#39special public policy adviser&#39 in the Washington office of the lobbying firm Alston Bird, though he is technically not a federally registered lobbyist.

But his wife Linda Daschle is a registered lobbyist at the powerful firm Baker Donelson, which does have some clients in health-related fields.

Obama Wednesday formally announced some additions of key White House staff members, including the previously expected choice of David Axelrod as Senior Advisor to the President

&#39I am pleased to announce these new additions to our team, and I&#39ll be relying on their broad and diverse experience in the months ahead as we work to strengthen our economy, reform Washington, and meet the great challenges of our time,&#39 Obama said.

Axelrod has been a fixture by Obama&#39s side for years, serving as the chief strategist for Obama&#39s campaign and as a top adviser during his run for the Senate in 2004.

Obama also announced Greg Craig as White House Counsel, Lisa Brown as Staff Secretary and Chris Lu as Cabinet Secretary

Meanwhile, critics questioned whether Obama&#39s top staff picks so far represent the &#39change&#39 that he promised during the campaign. More than half of the people named so far to Obama&#39s transition or staff posts have ties to former President Bill Clinton&#39s administration.

The Obama transition team said in a statement that they are dedicated to building a well-rounded administration.

&#39President-elect Obama is committed to putting together a competent team that is diverse in many ways, including experience. Serving in high level positions whether in government, in the private sector or in public service is seen as a positive,&#39 spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

Among the so-called &#39Clintonistas&#39 is former first lady Hillary Clinton who is widely considered the frontrunner to be the next secretary of state.

Obama&#39s latest selection, Eric Holder, offered the position of attorney general also has ties to Bill Clinton. Holder served in the Clinton administration as deputy attorney general.

Rahm Emanuel, the incoming White House chief of staff, is a former top aide to Bill Clinton.

Peter Orszag, the head of the Congressional Budget Office, was picked to head Obama&#39s Office of Management and Budget, CNN said citing a top Democratic source.

Orszag worked at the Clinton White House as special assistant to the president at the National Economic Council and served on the Council of Economic Advisers.

Pakistan calls for halt to US spy plane attacks

Islamabad, Nov 20 (Xinhua) Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has urged a halt to missile strikes by US drones inside Pakistani territory.

Kayani made the appeal while addressing the military committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels at the invitation of Admiral Giampaolo Di Paolo, chairman of the committee, according to a statement issued by the Pakistani army Wednesday.

The statement came a few hours after a US drone fired missiles in Pakistan&#39s district of Bannu bordering Afghanistan, killing at least five people.

Pakistani officials said that the US has fired some 20 missiles in the tribal region since August.

Kayani highlighted the need to reinforce Pakistan&#39s efforts and operate in a coordinated manner within respective national boundaries, the statement said.

&#39He urged a halt to unarmed combat aerial vehicle use within Pakistan&#39s territory,&#39 it said.

In his address, Kayani apprised the NATO military committee of the overall security situation in the region.
